The search for extraterrestrial life was boosted after the discovery of exoplanets orbiting red dwarf stars. As of June 4, 2026, there are 6,298 confirmed exoplanets in 4,709 planetary systems.
Assuming there are 200 billion stars in the Milky Way, it can be hypothesized that there are 11 billion potentially habitable Earth-sized planets, rising to 40 billion if planets orbiting the red dwarfs are included.
A new research suggests advanced civilizations are unlikely on red dwarf systems.
